Board Denies Santa Anita License To Run

The Oak Tree Racing Association was denied by the California Horse Racing Board of its license to run a meet at the Santa Anita track. Although it held horse races for 41 years, Santa Anita was currently found by experts to have an unsafe track surface, having a lack of consistency and evenness in its track base and presence of rocks.

The decision was apparently made based on the opposition of horse owners and trainers because of the track's synthetic racing surface quality during the board meeting held at Del Mar recently. The owners and trainers have preferred to hold the meet at Hollywood Park in Inglewood instead.

Santa Anita still has a chance of holding the meet that opens September 29 if Oak Tree can reach an agreement with the Thoroughbred Owners of California. Meanwhile, Hollywood Park has expressed its willingness and readiness to hold the meet in Santa Anita's behalf.
